While dining in restaurants, one often encounters occupational drivers rushing through their meals, finishing in just over ten minutes before hurrying back to their posts. 🚗 Long hours of driving, shift work, prolonged sitting with little physical activity, combined with high-sodium and high-fat diets, increase the risk of hypertension and stroke ⚠️.
For this reason, the HKUMed and the HKU Stroke team organized a health screening event, providing free health checks for professional drivers, along with stroke risk assessments and personalized health consultations, to enhance their awareness of stroke. 🩺
Research shows that occupational drivers are a high-risk group for stroke among younger individuals, with hypertension and high cholesterol being particularly common. In fact, nearly 90% of stroke cases can be prevented. By identifying risks early and starting with improving diet, developing exercise habits, and undergoing regular check-ups, the risk of onset can be effectively reduced.
Starting from small lifestyle changes:
🏃 Make use of spare time to walk or brisk walk for 30 minutes, or do simple exercises or stretching on the spot.
🥗 Choose low-sodium, low-sugar, low-fat, and high-fiber foods
🍱 Proactively request “less sauce, less oil”
🩺 Measure blood pressure regularly (ideal level below 130/80 mmHg)
🧘 Relieve stress through deep breathing or mindfulness
Step by step changes can effectively reduce the risk of stroke. It is never too late to change one’s lifestyle.
