Preventing Fatal Intracerebral hemorrhage | Article

Stroke is a common condition that leads to high rates of death and disability in Hong Kong. There are two main types of stroke: ischaemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage. Although the incidence of cerebral hemorrhage is 3 to 4 times lower than that of ischemic stroke, it is generally more severe and more likely to cause significant disability or death. It is important to note that cerebral hemorrhage tends to occur at a younger age. The primary cause of cerebral hemorrhage is hypertension (blood pressure >140/90 mmHg). Studies have shown that most patients with cerebral hemorrhage, especially those under 55, are neither diagnosed with nor receiving treatment for hypertension when the hemorrhage occurs. Therefore, adults are advised to check their blood pressure regularly. If high blood pressure is detected, seek medical advice and treatment promptly to prevent stroke.
