🫀Irregular Heartbeats May Signal Atrial Fibrillation — A Hidden Risk for Stroke 🧠

Experiencing an irregular heartbeat that alternates between fast and slow rhythms may be a warning sign of atrial fibrillation (AF), a common cardiac arrhythmia that can significantly increase the risk of stroke. 💔

Dr. Gary Lau explains that when the heart beats irregularly, blood may not flow smoothly through the atria, leading to the formation of blood clots. If a clot travels to the brain and blocks a blood vessel, it can result in a stroke.

The development of atrial fibrillation is often associated with ageing, structural changes in the heart, and chronic medical conditions. Notably, approximately one-third of individuals with AF are asymptomatic, meaning they may unknowingly carry an elevated risk of stroke.

In addition to atrial fibrillation, other major risk factors for stroke include:

  • Advanced age

  • Hypertension

  • Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)

  • Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)

  • Obesity

  • Smoking 🚬
