🫀Irregular Heartbeats May Signal Atrial Fibrillation — A Hidden Risk for Stroke 🧠

Experiencing an irregular heartbeat that alternates between fast and slow rhythms may be a warning sign of atrial fibrillation (AF), a common cardiac arrhythmia that can significantly increase the risk of stroke. 💔
Dr. Gary Lau explains that when the heart beats irregularly, blood may not flow smoothly through the atria, leading to the formation of blood clots. If a clot travels to the brain and blocks a blood vessel, it can result in a stroke.
The development of atrial fibrillation is often associated with ageing, structural changes in the heart, and chronic medical conditions. Notably, approximately one-third of individuals with AF are asymptomatic, meaning they may unknowingly carry an elevated risk of stroke.
In addition to atrial fibrillation, other major risk factors for stroke include:
Advanced age
Hypertension
Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)
Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)
Obesity
Smoking 🚬
Dietitian’s Advice 🍎: Prevention Starts with Everyday Habits
✔️ Be aware of “hidden sodium” in restaurant and processed foods 🍜
✔️ Limit or avoid alcohol consumption 🍺
✔️ Ensure adequate intake of blood pressure–regulating minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium
Further Steps to Reduce Your Stroke Risk 👇
🥗 Consume 3–5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily
🫒 Adopt a Mediterranean-style diet
🫀 Maintain optimal blood pressure (<130/80 mmHg)
🚨 Recognize early warning signs of stroke — remember the BE-FAST acronym:
B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
E – Eyes: Sudden changes in vision (blurred, double vision, or loss of vision)
